Day Eight

We’re almost through the entire course here, I hope you’ve gotten a lot out of it so far here’s today’s tips…

Make yourself appear to be a giant in the industry. How do you accomplish this you ask? It’s simple actually, a little money and a little care and you’ll be well on your way to looking bigger than you actually are. First off the biggest key to this is professionalism, things like personalized letterheads, envelopes, a good strong sig file for online e-mails (a sig file is the phrase that accompanies your signature, also known as your sign out) and professionally formatted letters helps a lot with this. It sends the message that you mean business and that you are also legit to others.

Using words like our or we a lot when explaining your band, record label, production company or crew automatically produces the idea that you are a bigger organization than you may be at the time. Logos help tremendously in defining yourself and your company too. Your band name or company name must be considered heavily too, often times names are picked that can easily be abbreviated into three letter like my record label, BlackRaven Entertainment, easily reduces down to the BRE. It in a way extends your brand and its’ trademarks and again adds in a dose of professionalism seeing as though almost every other organization is doing the same thing.

Two final ways to increase your presumed size as a company and band is sponsor targeted events which though sometimes could end up more of an expense than profit grabber does make others view you as being a top competitor in your community. The last technique is to join local and national, and possibly international programs, organizations, and associations. Most of these are open to a wide demographic and have low one time or once a year tax-deductible fees. Some however like the Grammy Assoc./foundation, the RIAA, and the performer rights orgs. like ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC and many others require you to have been in business for an amount of time, usually one year and to have released at least one commercial product. Joining in with things like sound scan, the music business’ sells tracking system, too also legitimizes you. Not only in fact will these legitimize you, but they’ll also put you in contact with the right people in the industry and help push you ahead of the pack. Trust me few indie’s are taking full advantage of these clubs, organizations, associations, and groups.

Tomorrow’s lesson will be on customer and employee care, so stay tuned and as always…
