Why Your Myspace Marketing Isn’t Working…

This is a fairly simple set of techniques to try for your next Myspace advertising campaigns. You see though, first I think we should talk about why what you already are doing isn’t working. Don’t feel bad either, I was victim of this too for some time.

You see, the average person’s first ideas as to how to get seen on Myspace are basically either to mass email everyone they can (whether people added as friends or not), leave annoying promotion advertisements in peoples’ comment boxes, or do a mass adding of as many people as possible hoping they hit the right people. Sort of their own Myspace blitz! However, with the last technique, even if you do get the add as a friend…how much correlation is there between your friends number and your number of page views? In the mass e-mailings you not only open yourself up to being booted by the “Myspace Police”, but you probably have found it highly uneffective and thus a huge waste of time. Comment box promos…well, let me just ask you, how many of those have you actually looked over thoroughly and not only that, clicked thru on?

Like I said this is how I myself attempted to create my own devoted lists of friends, or leads I guess you could say, however, as I am guessing with you, thus far it’s been totally a waste. So then what are some of the right steps to take? I’m glad you asked…

Here are 5 different tactics to making your next Myspace Advertising Campaigns A Success:

1. This first one is a must to get the true fans added as friends and return traffic to your page and hopefully website. FIND WHERE YOUR TARGET MARKET IS! This is fairly easy on Myspace. Over the years they have really increased their search engine abilities which should mean easy goings for you. Lets say you are an artist in Kansas, better yet, a hip hop artist from Kansas. Usually, lets be honest, you’d be screwed without moving to a more ‘happening’ place (musically speaking at least), but thanks to Myspace you can do two things. 1. Target as many related bands in your area and surrounding areas in hopes that the traffic they’ve gotten are targeted fans and you can then hopefully get piggyback hits onto you page from them (fans/friends) searching the artist’ friend list to see who they are feeling. 2. Why not do a local blast, I know above I said this didn’t work, however in your home town you should be able to generate some interest whether you’re good or bad due to a hometown support/pride in general.

2. Going back to adding friends that have similar music and styles as yours, once you find these artists (you don’t even have to add them for this to work) you simply add all of their friends/potential fans and build your lists up off of the sweat of their brows. It’s not about working hard, but it is about working smart. I do this with IndieMusicLounge.Com all the time, I simple find some of the other indie music focused Myspace pages and start adding away from their lists. It’s like having your own free direct marketing lists! Even if they don’t come thru the fact that I have the website’s full name as the header almost guarantees that they will at the very least see the site name, which is my ultimate goal anyway.

3. This ties into the last bit of tip two-Put Your Main Points You Are Trying To Get Across Right Up-front. This includes not only your headlines, but your quotes, main images, right at the top of your about me section, get your main focus across IMMEDIATELY. Why, well because most people at the most only tend to skim people’s pages and if you don’t have your site address, the fact that you are an artist (your tracks will help here I guess), have a cd project released, etc. at the top or in front of everything else you’ve got going on your message could get lost easily.

4. This relates to your profile itself. You should try to make it interesting, give facts, have surveys, blog for a more personal feel, include links to places other than your main website. In short let them into your life a little, or at least into your mind. Go ahead and pretend you’re already the celebrity you wish to be, what don’t we want to know about them, lol! This will make your page less sales-like and much more personal which is a common sells tactic. Starbucks uses it greatly, I heard they [the company] consider it the place between work and home-the relaxed, peaceful escape where you can either detox from work or pump yourself up with caffeine in preparation for work I guess.

They know your name, your drink, everyone’s smiley, it’s the real-life, modern-day Cheers, lol. In truth Starbucks is just a storefront for selling coffee and most people don’t realize that they are probably paying for the ambience just as much the products themselves. Make your viewers feel like they are becoming your friends and you should see repeat traffic and increase friend requests from people that are truly interested in what it is you’re doing-connection is everything!

5. Last but not least, correspond. Get in touch with every friend request you receive. I learned this from my real estate Myspace page. The people I’m usually adding there are probably the exact opposite of those of you reading this, meaning where you are creative beings learning to be business like, they usually are business like individuals seeking to become more creative minded. So things like follow ups/warm pitches come in as second nature to them. This is actually brilliant. Assuming that the person isn’t adding randomly you should find some luck in actually creating a true fan down the road, just don’t actually make it seem like that’s what you’re after. Say hi, introduce yourself, say thanks for adding me and then at most leave your web address or something and if they’re intrigued they’ll take it from there. Best of all, you won’t be spamming either.

Well there you have it, 5 tips to help you stop doing what isn’t working in your Myspace Ad Campaigns and start doing what will or should at least :) I have been studying marketing and sales lately like crazy and have come across the true internet gurus way of doing so and am currently testing them out in hopes that I’ll one day be able to continue to pass them on to you (I’m actually already plotting out several e-courses and e-books). Check the I-Rawk Fashions Line Myspace friend list amount to see what I mean here, and then with these other tactics I’ll be revealing soon go to the official IndieMusicLounge.Com Newsletter list on Yahoo! Groups to see just how well these teachings have helped me out (hint-while I had many readers due to rss, less than 2 weeks ago I only had 68 members actually subscribed-check it out, you won’t believe the results of these totally free marketing tactics!).

  3. Here’s how you can pimp your myspace blog to get more people to check you out continuously…

If you post relevant content to your myspace blog, and add niche-related friends to your friends list…make sure you also visit your new friend’s blog, and click ‘Invite to My Blog’ underneath their pic.

If they subscribe, then myspace will notify them on their home page whenever you make a blog post.

All I know is that my blog posts to my subscribers pull in more traffic than corny old bulletins.
